Government publish white paper on the future relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union

The Government have published their anticipated white paper on the future of the relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union after the UK leaves the EU on 29 March 2019.

It covers four main areas for the UK’s future relationship with the EU:

  • economic partnership;
  • security partnership;
  • cross-cutting and other co-operation; and
  • institutional arrangements.

The paper claims that the Government is determined to build a new relationship with the EU which would see the UK leave the Single Market and the Customs Union whilst protecting jobs, supporting growth and maintaining security co-operation.

There is a brief section on the environment in the white paper which states the Government’s commitment to maintaining high environmental standards through its 25 Year Environmental Plan for England and a new, independent statutory environmental watchdog which is currently up for consultation. The UK’s commitments to multilateral environmental agreements it is party to is reiterated, along with a commitment to a non-regression of environmental standards following exit day.

In terms of climate change as the UK’s climate ambitions are established in domestic law and go above its current obligations under EU law, the paper argues that post exit day the UK will maintain its high standards.

The next steps are for the UK to engage with the EU in further Article 50 negotiations and finalise the withdrawal agreement and future framework.
