New figures revealed for Injury and ill-health during 2013/2014

Figures have been published for injury and ill-health during 2013/2014 by the Health and Safety Executive.

It has both positive and negative messages, while Britain continues to be one of the safest places to work in Europe, many workers are still being made ill or injured by work.

Latest statistics published by the HSE has averaged that the cost to society from injuries and new cases of ill health due to current working conditions is massive £14.2 billion.

Statistics show that there were 133 fatal injuries, this is a fall from 150 the previous year. 77,593 other injuries were reported under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations SI 2013/1471 (RIDDOR). Shockingly, over two million people suffering from an illness during 2013/2014 thought it may have been caused by working conditions, current or past.

The highest risk industries to work in included construction, agriculture, manufacturing and waste and recycling.

Chair of the HSE, Judith Hackitt commented: “These latest figures remind us what health and safety is really about. We should remind ourselves what these numbers actually mean – the number of times in the last year someone went out to work and either did not return home to their loved ones or came home with life changing injuries.”

After the release of these statistics, the HSE are hosting a live chat on twitter to answer any questions.

The session will start at 3pm on Friday 31 October under the hashtag #askHSE.

Update to proposed exemptions of self-employed from HSW Act

Lord McKenzie of Luton has said he will continue his fight to amend the Government's Deregulation Bill.

The proposed amendment Lord McKenzie submitted was rejected by peers at 253 votes to 175.

Lord McKenzie has stated: “This issue is not at an end as far as we are concerned. The proposal cannot remain as it is, because it is dangerous.”

Referring to the cause of the exemption proposals, given by Professor Ragnar Löfstedt, Lord McKenzie continued: “The proposals are a long way off what Löfstedt recommended.”

Professor Löfstedt has been dragged into the debate, too. Lord Curry, defending the proposals, had said Löfstedt was “content” with the plans, however, both Lord McKenzie and Professor Löfstedt disagree with this statement. Professor Löfstedt said, “We should be looking at exempting self-employed individuals who don't pose a risk to others such as novel writers, web designers and academics.”
